FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

Kansas City, Mo. On Friday, October 2nd, 2015, from 5-9 pm the Todd Weiner Gallery will host the exhibition opening for “Primary Matters” by Don Kottmann which will run through Sunday, October 25th, 2015.

Don Kottmann is no stranger to the Midwest art scene. In fact, he was born and raised a Missourian. Originally from St. Louis, Kottmann fostered his career attending and graduating with a BFA from the University of Kansas in Drawing and Painting. After graduation, Kottmann taught at Washington University in St. Louis, Meremec Community College in St. Louis, and at the University of Kansas all prior to taking a position at Alberta College of Art and Design in Calgary. In addition to teaching, Kottmann has won many awards for his art practice. Recently, he has added the Joan Mitchell Foundation award to this list.

In “Primary Matters” at the Todd Weiner Gallery, Kottmann reveals another step in his evolution as a master painter. Kottmann unveils his newest paintings that utilize strong horizontals to serve as the reference point urging viewers to enter this different psychological state. He has evolved and changed his style pushing his paintings to become an interface that allows viewers to communicate with their interior self. Each of the featured paintings follows a metachromatic pattern changing in color, texture, pigmentation, and application through the layers of paint.

Kottmann perfectly describes his aim with these works saying, “Primary Matters is a tribute to the layers, complexities, and harmonies that constitute our core: that place where every action, thought, dream, and fear, has settled and where hope continues to soar.”
